Viral Infections

Viral Infections

It is easy to state in 2021 that viruses are one of the biggest and unpredictable threat that the humankind must face. SARS-CoV2 caused 240 million infections world wide over a period of 18 months with 4 million deaths. Influenza virus causes 1 billion infection per year with 400000 deaths. Filoviruses such as Ebola and Marburg have a fatality rate of 50% and 80% respectively, while untreated Dengue virus infection can lead up to 50% of mortality rate. Respiratory syncytial virus causes millions of infections each year with 1% or 60% mortality rate in healthy or immuno-compromised children, respectively. Hepatitis C virus infection rates are steadily decreasing, however there is still a risk for chronic infections.

Filoviruses

Filoviruses are negative-stranded RNA viruses belonging to the Filoviridae family. Their name is due to their characteristic long filamentous shape. Out of the six genera included in the Filoviridae family, only two are known to cause disease in humans: Marburg virus and Ebola virus. ...

Corona Virus

Coronavirisus are a large group of positive-stranded RNA viruses that belong to the Coronaviridae family. They are named after the characteristic appearance of virions in electron micrographs that is reminiscent of a solar corona. Seven Coronaviruses are known which infect humans. ...

Influenza Virus

Influenza are negative-stranded RNA viruses belonging to the Orthomyxoviridae family. Influenza circulates in three serotypes (types), of which influenza A virus (IAV) is differentiated into 2 groups and 18 subtypes. IAV subtypes H1N1 and H3N2 and influenza B cause seasonal epidemics. ...

Dengue Virus

Dengue virus (DENV) is a single, positive-stranded mRNA virus belonging to the family Flaviviridae and is the cause of dengue fever. DENV is transmitted through mosquito bites from the Aedes genus in tropical and sub-tropical climates, and is estimated to infect up to 400 million people globally per year. ...

Respiratory Syncytial Virus

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a single, negative-sense mRNA virus (Baltimore classification Group V) belonging to the Pneumoviridae family, and is the most common cause of hospitalizations for lower respiratory tract infections in infants. ...

Hepatitis C Virus

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a positive-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Flaviviridae family. HCV infection causes inflammation of the liver, that sometimes spontaneously clears within 6 months. However, in the majority of infectied people, the infection ...
